Shelley Moore Capito
Shelley Moore Capito is the
daughter of former WV Governor Arch Alfred Moore, Jr. who served three terms as
governor. She grew up in Glen Dale, Charleston. Her education was at
Holton-Arms School, Duke University, and the University of Virginia. Shelley is
married to Charles L. Capito and they have three children; two sons names
Charles and Moore and a daughter whom is named Shelley. She was elected to the
30th district of the WV House of Delegates in 1996 and served there for two
terms. Capito was named Minority Chairperson of the Health and Human Resources
Committee and a member of the Judiciary and Banking and Insurance Committees.
Capito first ran
for the House of Representatives in 2000 for the Republican nomination. She ran
against a millionaire lawyer Jim Humphreys, who she narrowly beat. She was the
first Republican to represent West Virginia in Congress since 1983. She was
also the first ever woman elected to Congress from West Virginia. Capito
continued to run for Congress and was re-elected for seven straight terms
before she decided to run as the Republican Party nominee in the 2014 U.S.
Senate election.
Capito has a set
of things that she is campaigning for during the election. Her goals are to: give
power to W.V., create more job opportunities in West Virginia, build a
foundation for West Virginia , prepare West Virginia for the future, give honor
to West Virginians who work to protect our freedom, and to support strong
families for West Virginia.
Natalie Tennant
Natalie Tennant
grew up in Fairview, West Virginia. She is that daughter of Rose Mary and John
D. Tennant, Jr. Tennant attended North Marion High School in Farmington, West
Virginia and graduated in 1985. After high school, she attended West Virginia
University where she graduated in the year of 1991 with her bachelor’s degree
in journalism, and she obtained a master’s degree in corporate and
organizational communication. In 1990, she was selected to represent West
Virginia was the first ever woman Mountaineer mascot. When she graduated from
school in 1991, Tennant began her career in television broadcasting and
reporting.
In 2004, Tennant
ran unsuccessfully for West Virginia Secretary of State, losing the Democratic
primary to Ken Hechler by 1,108 votes. In 2008, Tennant was elected secretary
of state, beating out Republican candidate Charles Minimah with 65% of the vote.
Tennant took office as the Secretary of State of West Virginia on January 19,
2009.
